Smart kids with video cameras

October 30, 2010

OK, so ignore the fact that I said I was taking a video hiatus. As we enter Halloween weekend, having thoroughly discussed the candy onslaught, I leave you with three (yes, three) videos from Elysian Charter School in Hoboken, N.J. The first one shows kids hip-hopping their way through a junk-food exchange that trades Halloween candy for […]

Picture this: Produce passport

October 22, 2010

At one of our favorite farmers’ markets this season, kids got a “Wedge Veg Passport.” Little food explorers drew pictures of the fruit or vegetable of the week, then visited the featured farmer for a sample. Then back to the market manager’s table for a passport stamp. Art, food, fun.   Copyright protected by Digiprove © 2010 Christina Le Beau

Bees, kids and the power of tiny beings

October 7, 2010

Because I’m a writer, I tend to look for opportunities that can only be described as “experiences I can share with my daughter, but also write about.” Part education, part entertainment, part social and journalistic experiment. That sort of thing.  Searching for the queen So it was with the “Vanishing of the Bees” movie trailer during […]

Junk food as kiddie heroin?

October 5, 2010

I’ve watched this video several times over several days, and I’m still not sure what I think. It’s unsettling. Intense. But is that chill in my spine because it goes too far? Or because it hits the mark? People argue over whether junk-food-fast-food-pseudo-food is addictive, but, really now. Of course it is. Former FDA commissioner David Kessler […]
